In US, patients ‘ name confused, wrong transplant performed

The hospital of Our Lady of Virtua in New Jersey realized on November 18 that a kidney transplanted to a 51-year-old patient should actually be transplanted to another patient of the same name and the same age following her operation.

BOTH PATIENTS UNDERWENT HEALTHY TRANSPLANTS

The transplant patient’s name was listed at the end of the priority list and the error was reported to state health officials and the Organ discovery and Transplant Network.

The patient, who had priority, had a successful kidney transplant on November 24.

Officials said necessary measures had been taken to ensure a similar error would not be repeated.
